When it comes to the summer, there isn't much better than a cocktail - from a blueberry margarita to mango mojito to a peach martini.

Living in Maryland, if you go to a restaurant, I can almost guarantee they have some type of crush cocktail, most notably an orange crush. With simple ingredients like fresh juice, vodka, triple sec and Sprite you can see its appeal.

It is both fruity, light and refreshing. But orange isn't the only flavor out there. And that's where this watermelon crush comes into play.

You just get some fresh watermelon and puree it, then add the rest of the ingredients. It is one of those cocktails that is both boozy and hydrating. I mean what is better than that on a hot summer's day?

    Ingredient Notes

    • Watermelon - you want to use fresh watermelon to make the juice yourself.
    • Vodka - use quality vodka like Grey Goose or Belvedere.
    • Triple sec - an orange liquor that complements the watermelon. You can also use Grand Marnier as well.
    • Lemon-lime soda - adds some flavor and carbonation. Sprite is my go-to but you can use any grocery-store brand as well.

process shots of blending watermelon before pouring through sieve and adding to glass with other ingredients

Puree the watermelon until you get juice and then pour through a sieve to remove any potential seeds.

Fill a glass with ice and add the watermelon, vodka and triple sec. Stir before topping with some lemon-lime soda.

    FAQs

What Makes a Drink a Crush?

A pint-glass cocktail which is usually made with fruit juice, flavored vodka and a light carbonated soda.

Can I Use Store-Bought Watermelon Juice?

While it is easier to just buy, this is one of those times where I say no to store-bought. It just doesn't taste the same.

What is the Best Vodka to Use?

I'm always of the view point that you don't want to go cheap with vodka, even with mixed cocktails. So my go-to is Grey Goose for this watermelon crush, but Belvedere or Tito's work well too.

Can I Make a Virgin Watermelon Crush?

Yes. Just use the watermelon and lemon-lime soda.

    What are the Best Garnishes?

A slice of watermelon works. I like some fresh mint as well but you can even go with a slice of lime to complement the soda or a sliced cucumber.

    Pro Tips/Recipe Notes

    • Take the time to make your own watermelon juice. It isn't the same as store-bought.
    • You can replace the watermelon juice with your favorite fresh fruit juice if you prefer.
    • Used crushed ice which will make the cocktail colder quicker.
