This blueberry smash cocktail is made with fresh blueberries, lemon juice, jam, thyme and gin that is topped off with some ginger ale, making it a refreshing summer drink.

When it is summer I think of refreshing cocktails - from a strawberry gin smash to a mango mojito.
But the king of summer fruit is blueberries so why not use them in a cocktail! I mean I try to take advantage of blueberry season as much as I can this time of year.
You might be thinking, thyme and blueberries? Does that go together? Why yes it does! Thyme has a slight lemon flavor to it so it complements the blueberries wonderfully.
And the gin to me is a natural partner as it is matured with juniper berries so it has a distinct taste of pine.
After one sip, you'll be wondering where this blueberry smash has been all your life.

- Blueberries - the fresher the better, but frozen works too.
- Thyme - only fresh thyme works here.

- Blueberry jam - adds some sweetness to the drink.
- Gin - use your favorite gin. I'm partial to Bombay Sapphire.

What is a Smash Cocktail?
In general smash cocktails include a spirit, fruit, sweetener, herbs and ice.
They got the name smash, because you smash or muddle the ingredients together to release the fruit juices. Because you are using fruit, it is typically a summer drink.
Types of Gin
There are 4 main types of gin, and they all vary slightly in their flavor.
- London Dry - the most common type of gin, which has a strong juniper flavor.
- Plymouth - drier than London Dry and a little more citrus forward.
- Old Tom - has more licorice and is richer in flavor than London Dry.
- Genever - almost no citrus flavor and the richest in flavor of all gins.
Pro Tips/Recipe
- If you don’t have fresh blueberries, frozen blueberries will work fine.
