This butter chicken pizza combines two popular cuisines by adding some leftover butter chicken and cheese to homemade pizza dough.

Pizza is more than just tomato sauce and cheese - from pumpkin pizza to buffalo chicken pizza to Philly cheesesteak pizza.

And this butter chicken pizza is the latest concoction. Yes it may sound weird at first glance but don't knock it until you try it. Creamy chicken with spices and then topped with cheese and baked on top of dough? What sounds better?

By using leftover slow cooker Indian butter chicken, this recipe is quick to put together but so tasty.

    Why This Recipe Works

    • Perfect crust - the homemade pizza dough leads to that perfect crust which is crispy and airy at the same time.
    • Cheesy - when you have pizza, you expect cheese and you get that with this recipe.
    • Flavorful - if you are a fan of Indian food and Italian, this pizza is the perfect way to combine two popular dishes.

    Ingredient Notes

    • Pizza dough - while I like to make my own, store-bought dough works fine.
    • Butter chicken - use leftover butter chicken for not only the sauce but the protein.
    • Cheese - mozzarella adds that creamy factor.
    • Onion - sliced red onion adds some spicy, but sweet flavor.

    Ingredient Swaps

As with any recipe, you can mix up the ingredients you use. Some variations include:

    • While I like leftover butter chicken for its ease, you can make right ahead of time.
    • If you don't have red onions, white, yellow, shallots or sweet onions will work as well. They all high slightly different flavors.
    • I like the traditional mozzarella cheese, but cheddar, fontina or havarti cheese all are good substitutes.

Evenly spread sauce of the dough before topping with cheese, chicken and onion.

Broil on high for 4-5 minutes or until the pizza is done. Remove and add some freshly chopped cilantro.

    FAQs

    What is Butter Chicken?

Not surprisingly, it gets its name by having butter in it, but it involves cooking chicken in a base gravy with tomatoes, spices, cream and butter.

Do I Have to Make My Own Pizza Dough?

Of course not. I just like making pizza dough, but you can buy fresh pizza dough where you roll out yourself or pre-baked crusts.

I still suggest buying the fresh dough. Most grocery stores carry it these days, but Trader Joe’s has the best!

    Why Use a Pizza Stone?

The stone holds heat and gives you a nice crust on the bottom which is important in a great pizza.

How Do I Cook a Pizza without a Pizza Stone?

I know not everyone has a pizza stone. If you don't, use a cast iron skillet. Just place some oil in the skillet before adding the dough and toppings and bake on the bottom third of the rack instead.

    How to Reheat Pizza?

Let's be honest, there isn't anything wrong with cold pizza. But if you must reheat this butter chicken pizza, don't do it in the microwave or it will get soggy.

Just place on a baking sheet in the oven at 375°F for about 10 minutes or until warmed through.

    Pro Tips/Recipe Notes

    • Take the time to make your own dough. My go-to is this no-knead pizza dough.
    • If you don't want to use pizza dough, naan works too.
    • Kick up the heat by adding some cayenne pepper to the sauce.
    • Don't go overboard on the sauce. You want to just spread it lightly.
    • Use a pizza stone so you can broil the pizza and get a nice crust, but bubbly top.

    Ingredients

    Pizza Dough

    • 250 grams (all-purpose flour)
    • 1 teaspoon sea salt
    • ¼ teaspoon dry active yeast
    • ¾ cup warm water

    Pizza

    • 1 cup leftover butter chicken (recipe below)
    • ¼ cup leftover sauce from butter chicken
    • 8 oz low-moisture mozzarella, grated (2 cups)
    • ¼ cup red onion, thinly sliced
    • fresh cilantro, chopped

    Instructions

    Pizza Dough

    • In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, salt and yeast. Add the water and mix with a wooden spoon or your hands. It should be sticky, but not lumpy.
    • Cover with saran wrap and a towel in a warm place, allowing it to rise for 24 hours. Transfer to a floured surface and shape into ball. Use when ready.

    Pizza

    • Use this slow cooker Indian butter chicken recipe and make ahead of time. Separate the chicken from the sauce.
    • Place pizza stone in oven 8" from the broiler element and preheat to 500°F. You want stone to be in oven for at least 30 minutes at 500°F.
    • Sprinkle pizza peel with cornmeal or flour. Use your hands to gently tug, pull and push the dough to the shape you want and place on pizza peel.
    • Evenly spread the sauce over the pizza dough. Top with the cheese and then the chicken and sliced onion.
    • Once stone is preheated, turn broiler to high. Transfer pizza to pizza stone and bake for 4-5 minutes or until top is bubbly and bottom is golden brown. Remove from oven and top with some chopped cilantro.

    Notes

    • Take the time to make your own dough. My go-to is this no-knead pizza dough.
    • If you don't want to use pizza dough, naan works too.

    • Don't go overboard on the sauce. You want to just spread it lightly.
    • Use a pizza stone so you can broil the pizza and get a nice crust, but bubbly top.
