When it comes to liquor, I'm a big fan of whiskey and like to use it in drinks - from a chocolate old fashioned to a Jameson whiskey sour to a bourbon peach smash.

But I've never infused store-bought whiskey with flavors. That was until I saw some peanut butter whiskey at a store. I thought to myself this would be fun to make at home, just like homemade vanilla extract.

    Why This Recipe Works

    • If you are a peanut butter and whiskey fan, why not combine the two!
    • It is surprisingly easy to infuse whiskey with peanut butter.
    • Once you understand the process of fat washing spirits/liquors, you can try other flavors.

    Ingredient Notes

    • Whiskey - Choose a good quality whiskey as the base. Bourbon or rye whiskey often work well due to their distinct flavors.
    • Peanut Butter - Opt for creamy peanut butter without any added sweeteners or additives. Natural peanut butter is a good choice.
    • Sweetener (optional) - Depending on your taste, you might want to add a sweetener like honey, maple syrup, or simple syrup to balance the flavors. This is optional and can be adjusted to your preference.
    • Additional flavorings (optional) - You can experiment with additional flavorings like vanilla extract or a pinch of salt to enhance the taste.

    FAQs

    What is Fat Washing?

Fat washing is a technique used in mixology and cocktail-making to infuse the flavor of fats, such as aforementioned peanut butter into spirits like whiskey, vodka, or rum.

The process involves blending the fat with the alcohol and then allowing them to sit together for a period of time. During this time, the fat imparts its flavor into the spirit.

What is the Best Type of Whiskey to Use?

Bourbon and rye whiskeys are commonly used as a base due to their distinct flavor profiles. However, the choice of whiskey can vary among brands and recipes.

    What is the Shelf Life?

Like regular whiskey, it has a long shelf life if stored properly. It's best to store it in a cool, dark place with a tightly sealed cap to maintain its quality.

    What are the Best Uses?

It can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in various cocktails. It's often used to create unique dessert-inspired cocktails or sipped as a dessert drink.

    Cocktail Options

You can use this peanut butter-infused whiskey in a variety of ways. Some include:

    • Apple Cider Peanut Butter Whiskey
    • Screwball Peanut Butter Cup Whiskey Cocktail
    • Peanut Butter Old Fashioned
    • Chocolate and Peanut Butter Cocktail

    Pro Tips/Recipe Notes

    • Start with a good-quality whiskey and natural peanut butter without additives. The quality of your ingredients will significantly impact the final taste.
    • Be patient during the infusion process. Taste it along the way to gauge the intensity of the peanut flavor. You can always extend the infusion period for a stronger flavor.
    • Adjust the sweetness to your preference by adding simple syrup or honey in small increments if needed.
    • Don't be afraid to experiment with flavor variations. You can add a touch of vanilla extract or a pinch of salt to enhance the taste.
    • Properly seal and store the whiskey to maintain its quality. Store it in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight.
