With the peak of summer here, what is better than a refreshing cocktail - from a watermelon crush to a passion fruit margarita a peach martini to a blackberry margarita. The options are endless.

But today is about this bright and citrusy spritz. The traditional Spritz Veneziano or Aperol Spritz, consists of Aperol, prosecco and soda water.

And while it is super tasty, I wanted to change it up. I'm a sucker for lemon and when it comes to a lemon liqueur, there isn't much better than limoncello.

So I replaced the Aperol with limoncello and used Sprite instead of club soda because why not? Add in some fresh mint and lemon slices and this limoncello spritz is not only beautiful to look at, but refreshing as well. In fact I like it so much, I made a limoncello martini as well.

    Ingredient Notes

    • Limoncello - an Italian lemon liqueur mainly produced in Southern Italy where the lemon flavor is the start.
    • Prosecco - a sparkling white wine which comes from the region of Prosecco, Italy. Champagne works too.
    • Lemon-lime soda - adds some flavor and carbonation. Sprite is my go-to but you can use any grocery-store brand as well or club soda.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

Add some ice to a wine glass before adding the limoncello, prosecco and Sprite. Stir to combine and top with some mint and sliced lemons if desired.

    FAQs

    What is a Spritz?

The original spritz was invented in the 1800s as a way to water down sparkling wine but the Aperol Spritz became popular in the 1950s. It is 3 simple ingredients, and this recipe replaces the Aperol with limoncello and club soda with Sprite.

    What is Limoncello?

Limoncellos is a liqueur which is made by infusing lemon peels with vodka. It is often served as shots after a big meal to cleanse your palate.

    Can I Make Homemade Limoncello?

Yes. There are plenty of recipes out there. Just peel 10 lemons and add to a 750 ml container of vodka. Let sit in a dark area for a month before straining and adding some simple syrup to taste.

    Pro Tips/Recipe Notes

    • The magic of this limoncello spritz is in the ratio. It is 3 parts sparkling wine, 2 parts liqueur and 1 part soda.
    • Used crushed ice which will make the cocktail colder quicker.
    • Herbs like mint or basil complements the lemon flavor.
