This garlic bread grilled cheese recipe is kicked up a notch by adding homemade garlic butter, combining two old-time favorites. I mean we all love garlic butter and grilled cheese sandwiches, so why not make them into one.

Oh the classic grilled cheese. Who didn't grow up having them? They were one of those simple sandwiches that were a hit with everyone.

The crusty buttery bread with the melty cheese on the inside. My mouth is salivating right now. But why not enhance it and add some garlic butter on the outside?

Garlic bread is another one of those simple recipes which everyone loves. So instead of just spreading some butter on the outside of the bread, I mixed in some garlic, parsley and Pecorino Romano.

And what you get with this grilled cheese recipe is an epic sandwich for both kids and adults.

    Ingredient Notes

    • Unsalted butter - the base for any grilled cheese to get that golden brown exterior on the bread. Make sure it is room temperature so you can easily mix everything and spread.
    • Garlic - by mixing in with the butter, you get added flavor.
    • Cheese - the Pecorino Romano adds a salty flavor to the butter, while the classic American cheese is used for the gooey factor.
    • Italian Parsley - adds a little bit of freshness and color to the sandwich.
    • Bread - use any type of bread you like, from classic white to whole wheat to Italian.

    Ingredient Swaps

Like any recipe, you can mix up some of the ingredients. Some variations include:

    • While butter is traditional, you can try mayonnaise it its place.
    • If you don't have Pecorino Romano cheese, Parmesan works as well or you can just omit.
    • When it comes to a grilled cheese sandwich, I like American cheese, but sharp cheddar or mozzarella are good substitutes.

Combine the softened butter, garlic, Pecorino Romano and Italian parsley in a small bowl and stir to combine. Spread on one side of four slices of bread.

Place two slices of cheese between two slices of bread and keep the butter on the outside. Place the sandwich in a skillet over medium heat and cook until golden brown, about 3 minutes. Flip and cook for another 3 minutes or until golden brown and the cheese has melted.

    FAQs

What is the Best Bread for Grilled Cheese?

White or sourdough bread are the most popular bread choices, but you can make any work.

    What is the Best Cheese?

The classic is American, but you can use any cheese you like. My go-to for something different is cheddar but Monterey Jack works great too.

    What is the Best Skillet?

My go-to is a cast iron skillet as it provides even heat distribution and creates that wonderful crust, but a non-stick skillet works as well.

    Pro Tips/Recipe Notes

    • As with any sandwich, bread is what makes a quality sandwich so make sure you use something you enjoy.
    • Since garlic is one of the main ingredients, use freshly minced garlic. Don't use the jarred stuff.
    • Don't skimp on the butter. Make sure you use all of the butter when spreading on the bread. It creates that crisp, buttery, golden exterior.
    • If you want extra gooey cheese, cover the grilled cheese while it cooks.
    • Added protein never hurts and some crispy bacon always pairs well.
