By adding Blue Curacao, this blue mojito is a spin on a classic that tastes great and just looks like summer.
When it comes to the summer, cocktails are all the rage - from a passion fruit margarita to a peach daiquiri to a limoncello spritz to a vodka sunrise.
They say your eyes help with tastes and the vibrant ocean blue color of this blue mojito is hard to stop looking at. Or if you're up for a different "color", a black mojito is a great option too.

Ingredient Notes
- Mint - can't have a mojito without some mint.
- Light rum - known for its underlying profile of sweet, toasted sugar, I like to use light rum for this cocktail.
- Blue Caracao - has a sweet orange peel flavor and bright blue color.
- Limes - adds acidity and brightness to the cocktail.
- Honey - gives an underlying sweetness.
- Club soda - by topping off the cocktail, you give it some carbonation.
Ingredient Swaps
As with any cocktail, you can mix up some of the ingredients. Some variations include:
- Lime juice is more traditional for a mojito, but lemon juice works too.
- I'm a fan of honey for sweetness in cocktails, but maple syrup is a good substitute.
- While you can use light rum, you can use your favorite type of rum.
- Club soda is my go-to for added carbonation but sparkling water works great.
Types of Rum
While there are a few varieties, there are 4 main types of rum, and they all vary slightly in their flavor. Just depends on what you are looking for.
- White - the lightest in flavor and typically used in drinks like this blue mojito.
- Gold - aged longer than its white counterpart. It usually has caramel added to give its golden hue and has a smoother taste than white rum.
- Dark - result of double distillation and should be sipped as its a stronger flavor like whiskey.
- Spiced - usually made from molasses or sugarcane syrup and typically adds spices to amplify the sweetness or add heat.

Add all of the ingredients except the club soda to a cocktail shaker and gently muddle everything.
Add to a glass with ice ⅔ of the way full. Top with club soda and add garnishes if desired.
FAQs
A classic mojito actually originated in Cuba and consists of mint, lime, sugar, white rum and club soda. Really the only difference with the blue mojito is adding Blue Curacao and using honey instead of sugar.
Blue Curacao is a liqueur that has been died blue but tastes similar to Triple Sec. It gets its flavor from the peel of the Laraha citrus fruit which is a bitter orange grown on the island of Curacao.
A "standard drink" is the amount of alcohol in a 12-ounce beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits. So it just depends on how much you can handle.
If you have a wooden spoon, just use the end of it to muddle everything. Works just as well as a muddler.
Equipment
The equipment you use is important to how the cocktail turns out. What is needed is the following:
- Cocktail shaker - while you aren't shaking the ingredients, it is easy to mix and muddle everything together. You can also skip the cocktail maker and just muddle the ingredients in a glass.
- Muddler - a wood or stainless steel muddler works. It helps infuses the mint flavor.
- Highball glass - also known as a Collins glass. You want a tall glass to serve a mojito in.

- Do not over muddle the mint or you will turn the taste bitter.
- Don't overdo it with the mint. A little goes a long way. 5 leaves is enough for 1 drink.
- Use honey instead of simple syrup. It may not be traditional but takes less work and adds additional flavor.
- Use light rum when making the mojito. Gold or dark rum can muddy the flavor and ruin the color.
- Use crushed ice which will make the mojito colder quicker.

Blue Mojito
Ingredients
- 5 mint leaves
- 2 oz white rum
- 1 oz lime juice (1 lime)
- 1 oz Blue Curacao
- ¾ oz honey
- 6-8 ice cubes, crushed
- 2 oz club soda
- lime wedges and mint leaves for garnish
Instructions
- Place mint leaves, lime juice, honey, rum and Blue Curacao to a cocktail shaker. Use a muddler to gently muddle the mint leaves, but don't muddle too much or you'll break up the leaves.
- Fill glass ⅔ of the way full with the mixture and ice.
- Top with club soda. Add extra mint leaves and lime for garnish.
