With warm spiced notes from Coca-Cola and dark rum and brightness from the lime and mint, this black mojito is a spin on a classic.

    two glasses of black mojitos

I'm a huge fan of taking a well-known cocktail and adding your own spin to it - from a vodka sunrise to a peach daiquiri to an Aperol negroni to an apple fizz to a Baileys espresso martini, the options are endless.

And the latest and greatest is this black mojito. By using Coke instead of club soda and dark rum instead of white, you add more warm notes and a dark, almost black color.

    Why This Recipe Works

    • It is a spin on a classic mojito.
    • The flavors of the lime and mint gives complement the spiced notes of the rum and Coke.
    • It can be prepared in under 5 minutes and is super refreshing.

    Ingredient Notes

    • Mint - can't have a mojito without some mint.
    • Dark rum - known for its underlying profile of sweet, toasted sugar, I like to use dark rum for this cocktail.
    • Limes - adds acidity and brightness to the cocktail.
    • Sugar - gives an underlying sweetness.
    • Coca-Cola - by topping off the cocktail, you give it some carbonation and color.

    Ingredient Swaps

As with any cocktail, you can mix up some of the ingredients. Some variations include:

    • Lime juice is more traditional for a mojito, but lemon juice works too.
    • I'm a fan of sugar for sweetness in cocktails, but maple syrup or honey are good substitutes.
    • While you can use dark rum, spiced rum can also be used.
    • Coca-Cola is my go-to for added carbonation but Dr Pepper works too.

    Types of Rum

While there are a few varieties, there are 4 main types of rum, and they all vary slightly in their flavor. Just depends on what you are looking for.

    • White - the lightest in flavor and color.
    • Gold - aged longer than its white counterpart. It usually has caramel added to give its golden hue and has a smoother taste than white rum.
    • Dark - result of double distillation and should be sipped as its a stronger flavor like whiskey. This is what I like to use for the black mojito.
    • Spiced - usually made from molasses or sugarcane syrup and typically adds spices to amplify the sweetness or add heat.

    FAQs

    What is a Mojito?

A classic mojito actually originated in Cuba and consists of mint, lime, sugar, white rum and club soda. This one uses dark rum and Coca-Cola instead of white rum and club soda. That's where the "black" color comes from.

    Are Mojitos Strong?

A "standard drink" is the amount of alcohol in a 12-ounce beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits. So it just depends on how much you can handle.

How Do You Make a Mojito Without a Muddler?

If you have a wooden spoon, just use the end of it to muddle everything. Works just as well as a muddler.

    Equipment

The equipment you use is important to how the cocktail turns out. What is needed is the following:

    • Cocktail shaker - while you aren't shaking the ingredients, it is easy to mix and muddle everything together. You can also skip the cocktail maker and just muddle the ingredients in a glass.
    • Muddler - a wood or stainless steel muddler works. It helps infuses the mint flavor.
    • Highball glass - also known as a Collins glass. You want a tall glass to serve a mojito in.

    Pro Tips/Recipe Notes

    • Do not over muddle the mint or you will turn the taste bitter.
    • Don't overdo it with the mint. A little goes a long way. 5 leaves is enough for 1 drink.
    • Use sugar instead of simple syrup. It is just easier to use and doesn't require extra steps.
    • Use dark rum when making the black mojito. If you go with white, it won't be a dark color which is the point of this cocktail.
    • Use crushed ice which will make the mojito colder quicker.
